CALCUTTA, APRIL 4: West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu admitted here this afternoon that “any alternative Government taking over in the event of BJP-led coalition’s collapse, may not last long.”

Hinting that the election may come inevitable in the process, Basu said: “But this government must go, so that the nation survive.”

Addressing a huge rally at the Brigade Parade Ground, he told the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the CPI(M), “No body wants another election now, but this Government must go.”

Basu reiterated that in case the Congress takes the initiative to form an alternative Government, “the CPI(M) will extend its issue-based support”. However, he said, “Efforts are also on to revive the United Front.”Saying that “this Government should go and sooner the better,” Basu added, “The BJP-led Government is not only communal, it is also a Government of corrupts.”

He dismissed the BJP-led coalition as a failure. Asking BJP leaders to show a list of theirachievements during their 12-month rule, Basu said, “This Government has ruined the economy of the nation by listening to the dictates of the IMF and World Bank.” He said the BJP had even bettered the records of the Congress which opened the gates of `unbridled liberalisation.’ He accused the BJP of giving more preferences to the multinationals than national investors.

Earlier, Basu said, “During my recent meeting with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, whom I know for long, I explained to him why I called them a Government of barbarians.”

“I urged him to give me another word to describe the act of demolition of Babri Masjid,” Basu said, adding that, “I even inquired from Advani what happened to the case in connection with the demolition of Babri Masjid against him. Advani told me they have not chargesheeted him as yet.”Addressing a huge DYFI rally today, Basu also cautioned the youth against “a malicious disinformation campaign against the Left Front Government, which said we have done nothingfor the people.” Admitting that “there are areas, like literacy, education and health where we may not have achieved according to expectations”, the Chief Minister said, “But it’s a lie to dismiss our achievement as zero.”

He asked the people to be cautious about the Trinamool Congress which invited the communal BJP to the State.

“The party is full of anti-social elements,” Basu said.
