SURAT, June 2: The Navsari Nagarpalika councillors have passed a no confidence motion against vice-president of the civic body. Only last week a no confidence motion had been passed against the president of the Navsari Nagarpalika following the defection of 13 Congress members to the BJP camp. In a letter written by the elected body to the chief fire officer of the Nagarpalika, the members have sought to remove the vice-president of the Nagarpalika Champak Vanmali Desai (Dahyabhai Digaswala) also. Last week, the body had passed a no confidence motion against the president Zaffar Quadri. Both the president and the vice-president belong to the Congress. With the defection of 13 Congress councillors, which had a strength of 22 in the 42 member Nagarpalika, Congress reduced to a minority. Now the BJP's strength swelled to 29. The minority Congress fought desperately as the BJP members along with the 13 newly added went ahead with a no confidence motion against Quadri. On Tuesday, the BJP members initiated no confidence proceedings against the vice-president Desai as well, whom they allege is doing nothing for the welfare of the people. The Congress members, stating the reason for their `shifting over' to the BJP side say that the autocratic and irresponsible style o functioning of state unit president C D Patel provoked them to switch sides. While the Congress lost the Navsari and Jalalpore Assembly seats, one of which was fought by C D Patel himself in the last elections, the only body that it was in power, the Navsari Nagarpalika has also gone to the BJP. The officer has recognised the breakaway group. Top
