No regular director for CSIR yet

The search for a director general of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is getting more curious by the day.

More than two months after the post fell vacant following the retirement of Dr R A Mashelkar in December last year, the government has not been able to make a permanent appointment to the hot seat. Dr M K Bhan, secretary in the Department of Biotechnology, was holding the additional charge of the director general till a suitable candidate was found.

Now in a curious reshuffle, Dr Bhan has been replaced with Science and Technology secretary T Ramasami, who too will hold an additional charge “till further orders”. Ramasami took the charge on Wednesday.

No reason has been given for the change, but it does suggest that finalisation of a permanent DG is still some distance away. The government had, in fact, decided on a name, but the person selected for the post expressed his inability to accept it because of personal reasons.
