No offence to what Warnie said: Gilchrist

Although Warne is believed to hold a grudge against Gilchrist, the later said Warne’s call to make Clarke vice-captain had reasons.

Shane Warne’s call to make Michael Clarke Australia’s vice-captain was perceived as a swipe on incumbent Adam Gilchrist but the stumper himself made light of it saying the spin legend had valid reasons to make such a statement.

“I read Warnie’s comments with interest. He’s a guy who thinks a lot about cricket. He loves cricket. I didn’t take any offence to what Warnie said,” Gilchrist said.

“I can see the foundation he’s based his comments on and certainly his intent is spot on in getting that young guy in there and letting him learn as much as he can for a time when he may assume that position (captain),” he added.

The aggressive left-hander said although he was all for Clarke’s promotion but warned that giving him too many responsibilities too early could ultimately be detrimental to his progress.

“Just at the moment perhaps the timing’s not quite right. Michael is still getting comfortable with his game and being a regular member of the side.

“Hypothetically, if Ricky (Ponting) goes down tomorrow and Michael has to captain four Tests against India, that might be a big ask for him at this stage of his development,” he explained.

Warne had advocated Clarke’s promotion as vice-captain but rather than a harmless suggestion, it was seen as a swipe at Gilchrist with whom he reportedly never got along.

Gilchrist was made vice-captain replacing Warne following the scandalous revelations of the leg-spinner sending lurid SMSs to an English nurse in 2000.

There is a belief that Warne continues to hold a grudge against Gilchrist but the latter rated their partnership as one of the most successful keeper-bowler combinations.

“It was just so much fun. He was just so accurate I got into a real rhythm and a groove with him. His pace, consistency of bounce, knowing you are standing at the right depth and could set your slips accordingly. Just that whole rhythm feeling,” he recalled.
