In what should be construed as a big victory for New Delhi diplomacy, the European Union on Friday upheld India’s argument on Kashmir stating: ‘‘I don’t make any difference between Kashmir and any part of the country’’.

‘‘Though European Union does not meddle in the internal affairs of India, we support India’s involvement with its neighbour, the talks process and the sustained efforts to bring normalcy in the area,’’ EU Ambassador F. Camara Gomes said on the sidelines of the seventh India-EU Roundtable meet, being held for the first time in Srinagar.

‘‘We welcome New Delhi’s initiative to launch a dialogue to bring about peace in the region. We support the dialogue of the Central government to tackle the internal problem of Kashmir and bring peace and progress here,’’ he said.

The members of the roundtable — which was headed by the Centre’s pointman on Kashmir N.N. Vohra, from the Indian side, and Roger Briesch, president of EESC from the EU — come from diverse backgrounds such as business and industry, trade unions, and economic and social sectors.

Asked if the EU ‘‘implicitly’’ supported India’s stand on Kashmir, Gomes said: ‘‘Politics is none of our business. We are here with a specific purpose to address the development of trade.”
