No co-relation between Nandigram and nuke deal: Congress

The Congress said the Left’s climb down on the Indo-US nuclear deal had no co-relation with the party's stand on the Nandigram violence.

The Congress on Wednesday said the Left’s climb down on the Indo-US nuclear deal had no co-relation with the party’s stand on the Nandigram violence but did not condemn the incident, limiting itself to terming it ‘regrettable’.

“There is no co-relation between Nandigram and the nuclear deal,” AICC spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said in New Delhi.

“In clear words, the party has said what has happened in Nandigram is very regrettable and should not have happened,” he said.

Ahmed said the Nandigram incident could not be condoned by any civilised society.

“Law and order is a state subject, but the Centre has provided CRPF forces there and the Home Minister has assured that whatever is needed to be done will be done,” he added.

On Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee justifying what happened in Nandigram, he said, “This could be his thinking. But the Congress’ thinking is that the violence in Nandigram is regrettable.”

The Congress comments are significant as the CPM and its allies in the Left are outside supporters of the party-led government at the Centre and that opposition BJP and Trinamool Congress plan to raise Nandigram in a big way in the Winter Session of Parliament beginning Thursday.

On Tuesday, Congress leaders and Union Ministers Pranab Mukherjee and P R Dasmunsi held talks with AICC general secretary Mohsina Kidwai on the Nandigram issue.

Kidwai, who is in charge of party affairs in the state, is expected to meet AICC members from West Bengal on November 18 to devise a strategy on the Nandigram issue.
