Former Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Nirupam, whose entry into the Congress met with stiff opposition, has finally found some support from an unexpected corner — the party’s minority cell.
The party’s North-West Mumbai unit led by Kamruddin Merchant, who is regarded to be close to Lok Sabha MP Sunil Dutt, had passed a resolution last week, requesting the high command to reconsider Nirupam’s admission.
Now, support from the minority cell of the same unit has come as a shot in the arm for Nirupam. His supporters include the State Congress Human Rights Cell, the Vichar Vibhag, Slums Cell and a handful of religious leaders.
In a faxed letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the office-bearers of these outfits have said that Nirupam was an asset to the party. They have also demanded action against Merchant
‘‘The propaganda that Muslims are displeased by the decision to induct Nirupam is false,’’ says the letter.
