BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah today said that Rahul Dravid should continue as India’s captain but added that the decision was left to the selection committee. “As a personal opinion I feel that Dravid should be given a chance to continue as the captain of the Indian team, but a final decision (on the matter) will be taken only by the selection committee,” he said and added that the decision whether to continue with coach Greg Chappell will be taken at the meeting of the Working Committee of the board on April 7. The BCCI secretary, however, refused to reply to a query whether Sourav Ganguly would replace Dravid as captain.

A booster for players

Kolkata: There is some good news for Team India after all. Sponsors Sahara Group have chosen to stand by the fallen heroes, shooting off motivational letters to every team member. All these letters were delivered to the players over last week. The company’s head of corporate communications, Abhijit Sarkar, said over phone from Delhi that the move was taken to “inspire the players”.

Fletcher flays comments

St John’s: The Wisden almanac is known as cricket’s Bible. That doesn’t mean everyone reads it. England coach Duncan Fletcher shrugged off criticism by outgoing editor Matthew Engel, who in his forward to this year’s edition, suggested the coach should be replaced because of his conservative tactics and selections. Fletcher wasn’t worried by the reach of the comments, saying he never even read the book as a young cricketer. “The part of the world I was from, it was more important to get out there and produce some good cricket,” Fletcher said. And Fletcher can at least say he has done that in his seven years in charge. He guided England to the 2005 Ashes—the country’s first series win over Australia in 18 years.
