SRINAGAR/ANANTNAG, FEB 18: Nine security personnel, including five CRPF jawans and four SOG personnel, were killed in a powerful IED blast at Kahleel Tral in Pulwama district, today afternoon which also led to the death of a civilian and injuries to two others.

The cops were killed when a vehicle in which they were travelling was blown up after militants detonated an IED planted on link road at Kahleel village 3 kms from Tral town. The vehicle was completely damaged in the blast.

The blast took place when SOG and CRPF personnel (STF) were on their way to launch an operation in a nearby village. Sources said the militants had anticipated the movement of STF and planted a powerful IED on the road. They said when the vehicle carrying policemen reached the village, militants detonated the IED which blew up the vehicle. Such was the impact of IED that no person inside the vehicle survived the blast. A passer-by was also killed and two others injured due to the impact of the blast.

The policemen killed have been identified as Abdul Rashid, selection grade constable, Abdul Majid, Ali Mohammad and Fareed (all Special Police officials).

Soon after the blast, security forces cordoned off the entire area and conducted search operations to track down the militants. The operation was going on when last reports came in.

Sheikh’s house `attacked’
Militants attacked the ancestral house of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah in Soura on outskirts of Srinagar, killing a security guard today afternoon. Inspector General of Police Kashmir Range, A K Bhan, however said the killing of a policeman is still a mystery as there was no sign of bullet injury on the body. He said the police is investigating the case to ascertain the cause of killing.
