The Army today called the killing of three students in Kupwara district’s Bangergund village ‘‘regrettable and unfortunate’’, while announcing a proposed redefinition of night-time ambush procedures to avoid further civilian casualties.

After visiting the victims’ families in Bangergund, Core Commander, 15 Corps, Lt-Gen S S Dhillon said he could ‘‘feel their pain and also see people’s anger against the troops. Their pain and anger is justified’’.

The commander, however, ruled out any conspiracy against the villagers. ‘‘I am sure, these boys were not killed intentionally,’’ he said.

Gen Dhillon said the boys killed in the ambush were moving in the dark outside the village without carrying any lights. ‘‘The men challenged the boys, but they ran in fright leading to this unfortunate incident,’’ he said, adding that only a while ago an armyman lost his life to militants metres away from the spot.
