A day after Defence Minister George Fernandes said National Human Rights Commission has ‘‘no right’’ to stay BJP’s ‘gaurav yatra’, the Commission today maintained that the Gujarat government will be answerable for any act of omission or commission that results in human rights violations before or after the yatra.

‘‘The Commission stands by its earlier order that the state government and administration was responsible for ensuring safety and security of its people and it expects that all due care will be taken by the state government to prevent situations arising that have the potential to endanger lives and property,’’ NHRC sources said.

‘‘It remains fundamentally important that those responsible for law and order be answerable for such acts of omission or commission that results in the violation of the law and the rights to life, liberty, equality and dignity of human beings,’’ NHRC said.
