Not satisfied with Gujarat’s response to its initial report, the National Human Rights Commission today gave it two more weeks to file a ‘‘more specific’’ reply, failing which the initial findings of the NHRC would be deemed correct.

In its reply to the commission, submitted on April 13, Gujarat had rejected one of the key NHRC recommendations — of letting the CBI investigate Godhra and the killings in Gulbarga Society in Chamanpura, Naroda Patiya, Best Bakery in Vadodara and Sardarpura in Mehsana.

The State contention was that it would be a waste of time since the Shah Commission was already looking into these incidents.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, which also failed to meet April 30 deadline, finally filed its report this evening after it too was given another two weeks by the NHRC.

The commission had prepared a report on various incidents of violence in the state, conditions in the relief camps and the rehabilitation measures taken by the administration. This report was based on the findings of the NHRC team which visited Gujarat during the riots.

The NHRC had asked Gujarat and the MHA to file specific replies to its report. The decision to grant them an additional two weeks was taken today at a meeting headed by NHRC chairperson Justice J S Verma.

The meeting made it clear that Gujarat was being given another chance to make its stand clear, failing which the NHRC observations in its report would be deemed correct.
