NEW DELHI, JUNE 16: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed Uttar Pradesh police to pay Rs 20,000 each to three women for causing unnecessary "harassment" and same to be recovered from the erring officials.
"The Commission regrets to note that the police officials who are meant to protect the human rights of the individual, have themselves been violating the basic human rights and harassing the people," NHRC chairman J S Verma said.
After receiving a petition by Bhanwati Devi, who alleged that her husband was falsely implicated in a murder case and she along with two others were illegally detained by police for three days, NHRC asked the DG (I) to ascertain the facts.
The NHRC received a report from SSP, Moradabad, showing that the husband of the petitioner was a dreaded criminal with number of cases against him. The complainant denied this, saying her husband was employed in a bank and was on duty on the alleged date of the incident.
The petitioner also reiterated her allegations against the police.
The Commission then asked the IGP, Moradabad, to inquire into the matter. The inquiry showed that Nirmal and Sumitra were illegally detained by a police officer for three days, but the other allegations could not be proved, NHRC said.
The report further indicated that these women were released after three days and no lady constable was kept with them. Therefore, the Commission directed payment of interim compensation to each of these three women, the order said.
