Some Jowai residents have filed an FIR against Jaintia Hills Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Banshan Laloo accusing him of assaulting them during New Year eve celebrations.
DIG (Eastern Range) D K Rapthap is conducting an inquiry into the incident, with Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Frederick R Kharkongor convening a meeting on Friday to discuss the issue.
Laloo is accused of misbehaving with and assaulting the New Year party revelers in the middle of Jowai town. As the situation went out of control, the Additional District Commissioner (ADC) and Extra Additional Commissioner had rushed in to rescue the police officer. The DySP was taken to Jowai Civil Hospital to determine if he was inebriated. Even as the police were waiting for a medical report, a group of people went to the Jowai Police Station and filed an FIR.
Kharkongor says if the ADC and EAC had not reached the spot on time, the situation would have escalated. He added that Friday’s meeting was being called to clear the misunderstanding between the police and public. “It is basically a confidence building meeting,” he said.
However, he added, the FIR lodged by the public would stand and the police inquiry would take its own course.
