January 10: Yodemand (name of the service/software)

A new Internet software service, pioneered by two Indian entrepreneurs, will help the users to not only have a free domain name of their choice, but also enable the home personal computer to become a web server.

The software called `Yodemand’ is a pseudo-domain name to real domain name "Redirection" service, informed Nitin Bhat who designed it along with a friend. “In other words if your name is `Vikas’ and you are unable to book the domain vikas.com because it has already been taken, you can use our service and register as vikas.abc or bill.wxyz or anything of your liking. Our service will redirect you to the actual domain,” added Bhat, who is presently a postgraduate Mathematics student in the University of Mumbai.

Also, if you have a cumbersome, long URL (universal resource locator) to your website say, werqwerqw.com/sdfasdf.htm you could register a pseudo-domain like say, yourname.mno and redirect this to the real one mentioned above.

This is normally useful for people having their websites on free servers or servers of establishments (in short non-commercial personal websites) where the URLs are invariably long and tedious, he explained.

Yodemand provides its users with the facility of having basic pseudo-domains of upto five characters (as against real basic domains of .com, .org, .net, .int, .mil, .gov, .edu besides of course several new ones that have recently come up).

So if your name is Jason Smith, you could register a domain with Yodemand service which could be, for example, contact.jason.smith.

However, one of the other main advantages of Yodemand is that your home computer becomes a "web-server". This means that it gets a pseudo-domain name like pat.abcd or pat.xyz or home.pat.qwe or anything.pat.1234 and can be accessed using this name.

Thus your PC becomes a "webserver" whenever it is connected to the Internet (by a modem). Normally all servers in general have to be connected to the Internet continuously by a leased line. Making the process of owning a personal webserver unaffordable and thereby out of reach of an average user, explained Bhat.

Another vital advantage is that you do not have to buy costly space on commercial servers to host your website. It also means that you save the trouble (and Internet connectivity time) of uploading your website that could mean several files amounting to several MBs (megabytes) onto free servers.
