PATNA, April 8: Rashtriya Janata Dal president Laloo Prasad Yadav today said a “secular alternative” would replace the Atal Behari Vajpayee Government on April 14.
“The communal and fascist Vajpayee Ministry will collapse on April 13… And a secular alternative will form a new government at the Centre the following day,” Yadav told reporters here.
Asked whether “the new government” would be a Congress-led coalition, he said, “It will be a coalition alternative… There is no confusion about it.”
“The Vajpayee Government is falling due to the contradictions among its allies,” he said. Claiming that all secular parties had stood as one in their “primary task of toppling the BJP ministry”, Yadav said, “Our dream is now not far-fetched.”
The RJD president said the country would see the coalition era for the next 15 years and expressed confidence that the new alternative would last for a long time.
Yadav said secular forces were opposed to the installation of “a communal” government at the Centre from the beginning. “But it was unfortunate that such a dispensation was born only to crumble like a house of cards later,” he added.
When his attention was drawn to West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu’s statement predicting mid-term polls, Yadav said, “All that we know is that the present dispensation has to go and a secular alternative must take over the reins of the country.”
He said he would leave for Delhi on April 11, “to topple the government.” Asked whether he would prefer a Cabinet berth in the new ministry, Yadav said, “I am just the kingmaker… Hum mantri banate hain bante nahin (I make ministers, not become one myself).”
On the possibility of a split in the Samata Parliamentary Party, the RJD president said, “The Samata PArty has aready split in Bihar with its founders like Brishen Patel and Shivanand Tiwari forming a new party, Samata (Patel)”.
