‘New era’ in Spanish football after Euro win

Spanish newspapers on Monday predicted a ‘new era’ in Spanish football after the national team beat Germany 1-0 in the Euro 2008 final to give the country its first major title in 44 years.

“Spain conquers Europe and opens a new era in Spanish football,” said Catalan sports daily Mundo Deportivo.

“You are the best” said rival Catalan sports daily Sport.

“We are champions!” sports daily AS said on the double front page which will hit newsstands on Monday while rival Marca screamed “Finally!” in its front-page headline.

Both newspapers almost doubled their print runs. AS will publish 600,000 copies while Marca will publish 700,000.

“Spain conquers Europe,” wrote top-selling daily El Pais while El Mundo published a giant photo of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres as he scored the only goal of the game over the headline “Spanish glory”.

“Finally! Spain put an end to its dark football legend,” wrote conservative daily ABC in its headline.

Catalan daily La Vanguardia called the squad “masters of Europe” while its rival La Razon headlined with “Champions!” on its front page.

Spain last lifted the European trophy in 1964 with victory over the former USSR in what was its only previous triumph at a major tournament.
