HYDERABAD, JULY 28: World Chess Championship for men and women would be held in New Delhi from November 25 to December 16, with a total prize money of US $ 3.5 million.

About 50 countries would be taking part in the 21-day chess extravaganza in the country capital, which would be played on knock-out basis. About 160 players, including 100 men Grandmasters and 60 Women Grandmasters, would be seen in action.

The men’s final round would be held at Tehran as the Iran Chess Federation had offered $ 2.2 million to Fide for staging the men’s final from December 21 to 31 and also for the men’s prize money said PT Umer Koya, Secretary, All india Chess Federation.

The women’s final would be held in New Delhi and the total prize money for women is $ 500,000. Koya said the Sport Minister SS Dhinsa was very keen and supportive to stage the Indian origin game in New Delhi. In the first week of August, the venue would be decided and by the second week of August, a powerful organising committee would be formed to make this World championship a grand success, Koya said. Regarding sponsorship, he said various companies were coming forward for the event but the organising committes would talk with various Indian and international companies who are keen promoters of sports before finalising sponsor for the event.
