India today threw its hat into the ring to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games, officially submitting its bid to host the Games.
Presenting its bid to host the 19th Games in New Delhi before the Executive Board of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) at its meeting here, Secretary-General of the Indian Olympic Association Randhir Singh said, “New Delhi has many suitable sports facilities and is ready to stage a great Commonwealth Games that will leave a legacy of cultural diversity and understanding.”
Indian officials said the sports-passionate nation of one billion people is ready to take its place on the international sporting stage.
New Delhi hosted the inaugural Asian Games in 1951 and again in 1982. It is also set to host the first Afro-Asian Games later this year, but India has never played host to a Commonwealth Games.
New Delhi’s challenge will come from Canadian city Hamilton, which also presented its bid today. The city hosted the first ever Commonwealth Games in 1930, then known as the British Empire Games.
The deadline for cities to submit bids for the 2010 Games ends on May 30. The successful city will be announced on Nov 1 after a vote by the 72 CGF members.
CGF Chairman Mike Fennel said “we welcome the strong enthusiasm demonstrated by the New Delhi and Hamilton delegations for hosting the Games”.
