New CII President Y.C. Deveshwar is on a rural drive. In his first meeting with mediapersons in Mumbai after taking over as CII chief, he cited the example of a paper mill, highlighting the farm sector’s ability to create a number of jobs by planting trees and also provide raw material to the mill. He also proposed the need for labour reforms in the same vein.
Emphasising on the need to develop 35 million hectares of wasteland, Deveshwar said CII will focus on sectors, which will have a multiplier effect on the economy. Welcoming the amendment to the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee Act, Deveshwar reiterated the need for a common single market to enable movement of goods and service with a unified tax structure. Europe has a unified market with a common tax structure and one currency, he added.
