The Director of the North East Programme Production Centre (NEPPC), B. Chakraborty has been placed under suspension by the North East Doodarshan authorities, following allegations of serious irregularities in allocation of funds and programmes.

The Prasar Bharati authorities, meanwhile, have also issued a show cause notice to P.K. Singson, Deputy Director-General (NE) to explain his inaction in curbing corrupt practices in allocation of the programmes.

The suspension of Chakraborty and issuance of show cause notice Singson was preceded by a high-level inquiry headed by Uday Sahay, Chief Vigilance Officer, Prasar Bharati, last month, during which he met a number of private programme producers and gathered information about the alleged irregularities.

The Chief Vigilance Officer, sources said, found prima facie evidence that Chakraborty misappropriated the funds while allocating commissioned programmes that Doordarshan had reserved for producing programmes exclusively on the Northeastern region.

Earlier, the Northeast TV Producers Association had alleged that the NE Doordarshan authorities had flouted the norms while selecting producers for programmes by preferring Delhi based producers over the local ones.
