The Cabinet today gave its nod to the construction of a chancery, residences and common community facilities for the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. This will be set up within the India House estate at a cost of over Rs 125 crore.

The Cabinet approved the construction of the chancery complex on the logic that it would save around Rs 1 crore annually, which it now pays as rent for hiring residences and a library-cum-reading room.

At present, the Embassy offices are located in dilapidated barrack-type structures spread across the estate in an unplanned fashion.

Besides, the Cabinet approved a Rs 1,984 crore assistance package to Bhutan for its sixth five year plan ending 2007. The decision will lead to continued strengthening of India-Bhutan relations based on ‘‘our strategic and economic interests in an area of high geopolitical sensitivity,’’ said an official statement.
