Fearing arrest following the emergency in Nepal, a former minister and several political leaders have slipped out to neighbouring Uttaranchal to take refuge.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil visited Dehra Dun on Sunday night to review the security situation along the Indo-Nepal border.

More than 12 leaders of Nepali Congress and Left-wing Nepali Communist Party have crossed over and are putting up with relatives and friends here, especially Pitthoragarh and Banbassa in Champawat and Khatima in Udham Singh Nagar district.

Former Education Minister Dilender Budh reached Banbassa soon after emergency was declared.

Vinaydwaj Chand, a member of the Central Committee of Nepali Congress, Narender Singh Bisht and Vishnu Dutt Joshi are in Pitthoragarh. Ishwari Kharel, a former mayor and senior Nepali Communist Party leader, along with a dozen students and youth leaders are holed up at Banbassa.

The Uttaranchal government has stepped up security along more than 200 kilometres of the Indo-Nepal border.
