Ashish Nehra may not have bowled India to a win in the second Test at Hamilton, but it has certainly paid rich dividends for him. His bowling did not go unnoticed as the selectors named him and Baroda all-rounder Rakesh Patel as the two remaining players in the one-day squad for the forthcoming seven-match series scheduled to start in Auckland on December 26.

This also ended any hope that Kerala speedster Tinu Yohannan and Dinesh Mongia may have harboured for a one-day call-up. National chairman of selectors Brijesh Patel while talking to The Indian Express over the phone opined that Nehra was being preferred over Yohannan as he ‘bowled well’ on the final day of the Hamilton Test.

‘‘Ashish (Nehra) has bowled well and so we decided to stick to him,’’ he said.

Patel also informed that first-timer Rakesh Patel is being looked at with World Cup in mind. ‘‘We (selectors) want to have a look at one more bowler before the World Cup, just in case we are faced with a bowler breaking down. Also he (Rakesh Patel) can contribute with the bat.’’ Selectors had already named a 14-man squad on Wednesday alongwith the 30-man World Cup squad.
