AUG 8: Neha Gangoli had a day of mixed fortunes today as she won the girls’ singles title, but was ousted in the women’s singles semifinal today. She claimed the first crown of the Greater Mumbai District tournament at the Cricket Club of India courts when she defeated Jhanvi Lakhani 11-2, 11-2.

Both men’s and women’s finals tomorrow will see the top seeds vying for the honours. In the semifinals, No 1 seed Vikrant Patwardhan (Mumbai Customs) conquered Kunal Vaswani (No 4 seed) 15-6, 15-6, while No 3 Manohar Kanchawade conceded his semifinal to Vivek Gautam when trailing 13-15, 0-5.

Asawari Patwardhan (Mumbai Customs) had little trouble in beating Pooja Kotwani 11-1, 11-1 and will meet Firoza Batliwala in the finals. Batliwala defeated Gangoli 12-9, 11-6. Gangoli took just 10 minutes to end Lakhani’s challenge So complete was Gangoli’s domination that the only time Lakhani made an impact was when she won two points in succession with some good placements at the net to take the score from 0-9 to 2-9. It was Gangoli all the way from there on.

Gangoli was back on court 35 minutes later to face Batliwala. But this time, she met her match in the left-handed No 2 seed playing with a strapped knee. The latter’s superior court craft and speed gave her the match in 20 minutes during which Gangoli resisted in the first game, but could not sustain it long enough. Gangoli combined with Lakhani to claim the sub-junior girl’s doubles and plays Lakhani again in the sub-junior final tomorrow.

No 2 Gautam played a tactically well-controlled game in the first semifinal. Kanchawade started aggressively and jumped into 12-7 lead. But in what seemed to be a case of burn out, he fell aside and let Gautam come back to win the game 15-13. Gautam went ahead 5-0 in the second game when a bout of cramps made Kanchawade pull out. The No 3 seed had played a tough three-game quarter-final against Behzaad Devadhvala yesterday.

Patwardhan faced some resistance from Vaswani, but in the end was just too good for the No 4 seed. Vaswani ran Patwardhan close in the start of both the games but disappointed just when he looked capable of taking it through. The battle of left-handers went in favour of the top-seed 15-6, 15-6 in 25 minutes.

Kotwani was no match for Asawari Patwardhan in the other women’s semifinal, going down in nine minutes while winning just two points.
