February 3: Central bank of India’s N Neelkantan emerged supreme in the PK Prabhudesai Memorial FIDE-rating Chess Tournament that concluded at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Works canteen here today.

Neelkantan collected a full point in the ninth round as his opponent Ravi Bhave didn’t resume the adjourned game and resigned. In the event, the winners ended up with a tally of 7.5 points to clinch the title.

Manish Kumar came second garnering seven points after defeating Ketan Boricha in the last round. Pankaj Joshi (6.5) came third.

FIDE Master Avinash Awate, who had started off in a whirlwind fashion winning five matches in succession ended up fourth with six points. Interestingly, Awate had tamed Neelkantan in the fourth round.

Mahindras struggling

Mahindra and Mahindra after bowling out Air-India for 203 were struggling at 33 for three when stumps were drawn on the opening day of their Mahindra Invitational Cricket Tournament here today.

Raunak shines

Raunak seth was stretched to the limit in the first round of the boys’ under-12 category of the Bhatija Open junior tennis tournament at the Khar Gymkhana today.

Seth won in the tie-breaker 7-4 to advance to the next round.

Ace XI win

Ace XI defeated Black Hawks 2-0 in the Don Bosco Challenge Cup for Seniors, organised by the Don Bosco Youth Centre (Kurla) at their home ground at Kurla.

Ace XI started off well and scored in the 15th minute when a corner kick taken by Manuel D’Souza was neatly tapped home from close by Alex D’Souza.

Ace XI’s struck again in the 45th minute. A good combination between Alex D’Souza and JaideepSarkar saw the latter beat two defenders and an onrushing goalkeeper and place the ball in the untenanted net.
