The proposed joint venture companies by National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in milk production, in essence would pave the way for loss of farmers’ control over brand and marketing.

This was stated by Dr Verghese Kurien, chairman of Institute of Rural Management (IRMA) inaugurating the workshop on ‘Designing Cooperative Companies/JVs in the emerging environment’.

“Usurping the brand and marketing rights from a farmer organisation is detrimental to its long term interests,” added Kurien, who is also the founder of NDDB, in a press release. He felt NDDB’s investment in joint ventures was not consistent with the disinvestment policy pursued by the Centre.

Besides, he cautioned that the government will be free to sell any company that NDDB may promote since NDDB is a government body. He reminded that as per its charter, the NDDB’s resources should be used only for helping the cooperatives and are not meant for investing in joint ventures. If it desires to change its charter and mandate, it may go to Parliament seeking change.
