After a trip to the Rashtrapati Bhavan and vociferous protests in Parliament, the NDA today knocked at the Election Commission’s doors to bring an end to bureaucratic reshuffles in Bihar.
Led by JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar, the NDA delegation met Chief Election Commissioner B.B. Tandon and Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami to doubly ensure that the Commission keeps a close watch on the transfer of officials in the election-bound state.
The Commission has already directed the state government not to transfer any official involved in election work without prior consent from the EC.
Requesting the Election Commission to be mindful of who is being posted where in the districts, Kumar said, ‘‘It is important, the Commission acknowledged the sensitive nature of their work.’’ Bihar Chief Secretary G.S. Kang had recently gone on leave to protest the transfer of 17 IPS officers without his knowledge by Governor Buta Singh.
Terming as ‘‘doctored’’ reports of the Bihar administration that polls could not be held before October or November, the six-member NDA delegation also asked the EC to hold elections in Bihar as early as possible.
