Relations between the Opposition and Somnath Chatterjee are set to deteriorate further with NDA today accusing the Lok Sabha Speaker of ‘‘creating the unwarranted controversy’’ over the powers of the legislature and judiciary.

They are also keeping alive their threat to bring a no-confidence motion against Chatterjee. The NDA also indicated that Speakers in NDA-ruled states will not attend the meeting called by Chatterjee to discuss the implications of the Supreme Court interim order on the Jharkhand legislature.

A resolution adopted by NDA’s top leadership defended the SC order as it was meant to counter ‘‘the constitutional misconduct’’ of the Jharkhand governor. ‘‘The challenge to the action of the Governor and the judicial review in that context has been deliberately misinterpreted to create a ‘legislature vs judiciary’ issue,’’ the resolution said. It added: ‘‘The Lok Sabha Speaker, instead of being concerned with the subversion of the democracy…was concerned only with the remedy adopted to check the subversion.’’

NDA was equally critical of Chatterjee’s decision to convene a Speaker’s Conference on the issue. ‘‘The NDA is sure that Speakers would exercise statesmanship with a constitutional vision before deciding to attend this conference.’’
