NEW DELHI, JULY 22: Regrouping of "1977-like forces" is expected to have its reverberations at the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting convened on July 31.
While some NDA members including BJP are likely to question the NDA convenor George Fernandes why they were not taken into confidence before Lok Shakti, Samata Party and Janata Dal joined hands yesterday, some others like DMK and Trinamool Congress may advocate formation of a front within the NDA, BJP soures said.
George would have lot of explaining to do about the Janata Dal developments following the merger of the Samata and Lok Shakti with JD, and the latter’s decision to join NDA.
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who will preside over the meeting, is likely to inform the NDA constituents with the latest developments on the Kargil issue.
The BJP general secretary Narendra Modi today admitted that his party would take a stand on Janata Dal joining the the NDA at July 31 meeting. He however, maintained that the party could not ignorethe sentiments of its Karnataka unit in taking a final decision in this regard.
The BJP was confident that the new political equations following the Samata Party and Lok Shakti aligning with the JD will in no way adversely affect its poll prospects in particular or that of the NDA in general, party sources said.
The sources pointed out that the BJP and the Lok Shakti are evenly positioned in North Karnataka while the the former is stronger in South Karnataka. “Karnataka Chief Minister is a discredited person. If we have to go along with him in the state, our prospects might suffer”, the sources claimed.
