Congress president Sonia Gandhi today charged the NDA government with failing to provide a clean and transparent government and said it had been embroiled in a ‘‘series of scams’’.

Winding up her party’s campaign for the first phase of simultaneous polls in Orissa here, she said, ‘‘had the Vajpayee government been serious in providing clean and transparent government, so many scams, including the share scam and the UTI scam, would not have taken place.’’

Speaking at the Sarbahal High School ground with the temperature hovering around 45 degrees celsius, Sonia said the BJP had only made ‘‘false promises’’ to the people which it forgot after coming to power.

‘‘They are only interested in somehow grabbing power, but politics should not be used to serve one’s interest,’’ she said.

Sonia was accompanied by PCC chief J.B. Patnaik and AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh.

She said both NDA government and the Naveen Patnaik-led regime in Orissa had ‘‘bluffed’’ the people and did not undertake development projects as promised earlier. Sonia said not only had they failed to take up development work but also forgotten to pursue projects taken up by the previous Congress government for betterment of the Koraput-Balangir-Kalahandi region.
