NCW rift shows on chief’s last day in office

Poornima Advani’s term as chairperson of the National Commission for Women had an acrimonious ending today, with a senior member accusing her at a press conference of ‘‘functioning arbitrarily.’’

Sudha Malaiya barged into a press conference held by Advani’s and questioned officials on why she and other members were not informed. Facing Advani, Malaiya said that ignoring members on all important issues had become a ‘‘routine in the commission’’.

Malaiya refused to speak to the media. But other members also claimed that that Advani had acted without their consent on many matters.
