Scotching speculation about differences in the NCP over Sonia Gandhi’s foreign origin, NCP president Sharad Pawar today said people will not allow a ‘‘foreigner’’ to become prime minister and ruled out any change in the party’s stand on the issue to save the coalition government in Maharashtra.

‘‘Whatever the sycophants in the Congress may be saying, the voter will not allow a foreigner to take over again,’’ he said and claimed an ‘‘understanding’’ between the PM and the Congress president for ‘‘mutual benefit.’’

Pawar said the NCP will raise the foreign origin issue in the next Lok Sabha polls. He said the issue was not related to the coalition in Maharashtra.

After TN CM Jayalalithaa and NCP leader P.A. Sangma’s attack on Sonia, Pawar, at the NCP meeting over the weekend, had appeared to go soft on the foreign origin issue.
