National Commission for Minorities (NCM) chairman Tarlochan Singh has said there is no gurdwara in Iraq and therefore its damage, details of which Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has requested from the US, is out of the question.

His remarks, contested by historians, came at a ceremony attended by senior leaders of former Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal’s Shiromani Akali Dal and former SGPC chief G.S. Tohra’s Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal last evening.

‘‘Iraq has no gurdwara and it is surprising that requests have been made with the US for the assessment of damage it has suffered during the US-led war against Baghdad,’’ he said. Historians, however, rejected his claims that Baghdad had no shrine in his memory.
