Ten days after Justice Amitava Lala placed a blanket ban on rallies in Kolkata on weekdays, about 100-odd activists of the CPI (M-L) defied the order on Friday afternoon. As the Naxalites inched through the streets, policemen watched in silence, saying they were yet to receive a copy of the Calcutta High Court order.
‘‘What do we do if we do not receive a copy of the order?’’ DCP (HQ) Kuldip Singh asked newspersons. ‘‘What do we do after arresting them? Under which law will we book them? Even you are free to take out rallies,’’ he added.
More rallies are in store next week. The CPI(M)’s student wing SFI, youth wing DYFI, labour wing CITU, and women’s outfit Ganatantrik Mahila Samity will take out rallies on October 13, October 14 and October 15 respectively.
Meanwhile, BJP president Venkaiah Naidu called former state CM Jyoti Basu ‘‘barbaric’’ at a press conference here today. ‘‘Jyoti Basu used to call us ‘barbaric’. Now, he and his partymen are acting in a barbaric manner, attacking the judge personally and making derogatory remarks. They are out to undermine the judiciary and in the process are out to demean democracy,’’ he said. ‘‘Rallies can be held causing minimum inconvenience and we suggest an all-party meet to decide on the issue,’’ he added. The CPI(M) reacted sharply to Naidu’s remarks. ‘‘The whole country knows who are the real barbarians. Even Naidu knows that,’’ CPI(M) state secretary Anil Biswas said.
