External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh today raised the issue of Sarabjit Singh — who is facing a death sentence for his alleged role in a series of bomb blasts — with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf and urged him to take a humanitarian view in the matter.

Singh took up the matter with the Pakistan President during their 40-minute meeting. Musharraf said he will take note of Singh’s request when the matter is brought before him.

Last week, Sarabjit’s lawyer filed a petition before the Pakistan Supreme Court, seeking review of the conviction. In case the court rejects this, Sarabjit’s sole option will be a mercy plea to the Pakistan President.

Musharraf has maintained that he will treat the matter with compassion but currently the issue is in the Supreme Court and due legal processes have to be followed.

The issue of dealing with prisoners also came up in the two-day talks, with India suggesting an agreement on treatment of prisoners.

This requires both sides to immediately notify each other regarding any detention and grant consular access within 90 days.
