Aneil Mathrani, a Natwar confidante who was appointed OSD in the Ministry of External Affairs and later made India’s Ambassador to Croatia, has more questions to answer besides his travel to Jordan on the same day as Natwar’s son Jagat Singh weeks ahead of the illegal surcharge payments as per the Volcker report.

Why is he not relinquishing charge as Indian Ambassador to Croatia after being asked to do so? Even his replacement has been cleared by the government.

It’s been nearly three months since Mathrani has been away from the Indian mission at Zagreb.

Yesterday, Mathrani told The Indian Express that he was here for ‘‘medical reasons.’’ Today, when asked why he hadn’t handed over charge, he said: “The Ministry will be in the best position to answer this question. You can also ask the Croatian government.’’

New Delhi, sources said, has already identified his successor. Rajiv Mishra, in India’s mission at the WTO in Geneva, is cleared to take over but is waiting because Mathrani refuses to vacate the post.

Mathrani’s association with Natwar is a long one. He was the secretary of the Congress’s foreign cell during the time oil was bought from Saddam’s Iraq against rights allotted to Natwar and the Congress. Natwar was its chief.
