The Bihar administration today sounded a nationwide alert for securing the arrest of RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin. Eight non-bailable arrest warrants are pending against the Siwan MP and he is on the run.

Ashish Ranjan Sinha, Director General of Police (DGP), Bihar said police forces of all states have been alerted. Copies of the arrest warrants have been already faxed to the DGPs and the home secretaries of all states, he said.

“Steps are being taken to stop the MP from flying out of the country by alerting various airports and immigration authorities,” he further said.

The alert has come following a request by the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Siwan. In a letter to the authorities in Patna, they had urged that a nationwide alert be sounded for the MP’s arrest since the Bihar police team camping in Delhi have not been able to locate him.

The alert, however, has come after some bureaucratic wrangling. Bihar Chief Secretary G S Kang and Sinha differed over sounding a nationwide alert. The DGP argued that the Siwan SP is competent enough to arrest the MP and there was no need for approaching him or the Home Department.

“The warrants were issued by the officer-in-charge of Hussainganj police station, and thereby the Siwan SP was free to execute them and there was no need for approaching me or any other department for help,” he told reporters.

The Chief Secretary, however, said, “The DM and SP need help from other senior officials.”
