Ashok Sindhi, who was allegedly involved in the Naroda-Patiya massacre, has been remanded to police custody till October 4. Officials of the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) had arrested him from Naroda area and presented him before the Metropolitan Magistrate of Court No 11 on Tuesday.
Sindhi’s involvement in the massacre came to light after cellular phone dealer Nadeem Saiyeed filed a complaint in this regard with the DCB on May 19.
According to Saiyeed’s statement, Hussainbibi, sister of Mirza Moebali who was burnt to death during the riots, found a cellular phone lying next to her brother’s body. Through a relative of hers, she gave the phone to Saiyeed on March 18.
When the phone was in Saiyeed’s custody, he noted down the telephone numbers in the ‘Received Calls’, ‘Dialled Calls’ and ‘Missed Calls’ memory, the complaint stated. Saiyeed also claims that there were numbers of the office of Assistant Commissioner of Police (G Division) M.T. Rana, police constable of DCB Dayabhai Jitya and police constable Balwant Singh.
In the statement recorded by ACP (Crime) S.S. Chudasama on May 2, Saiyeed alleged that while the phone was with him, he had received threat calls on that phone.
He, allegedly, received a call on his own cellphone on April 28 where the caller identified himself as Ashok Sindhi and threatened him. Based on Saiyeed’s and Hussainbibi’s statements, police found Sindhi’s prima facie involvement in the massacre and named him absconder in the chargesheet filed on July 4.
Meanwhile, in a complaint lodged with the Karanj police on Tuesday, Saiyeed alleged that he had received a threat call from Sheera, who claims to be Sindhi’s friend. Karanj police have registered a case under Section 507 of IPC and had allotted an armed constable.
