A few hours before his death, Rizwanur Rehman, the computer graphics teacher whose body was found on railway tracks just a month after his marriage to a Hindu girl, had made phone calls to his former girlfriend, who CBI reckons to be a key figure in efforts to unravel the case.Briefing newsmen, CBI DIG Satish Golcha said Rehman's former girlfriend, Pompi Roy was questioned as also Pradip Todi, the brother of Rizwanur's father-in-law Ashok Todi, for a second time.CBI sources said Pompi seemed to be an important figure in the case. In the last few hours before Rizwanur's death on September 21, he had made five calls to her.Rizwanur spoke to Pompi for a long time and she is an important figure in the case, CBI sources said.The deceased had also spoken to rights activist Sujato Bhadra, his student Madhavi Chandak and his friend Sapnil on phone, they said.Television news channels, quoting transcripts released by police of phone calls made by Rehman, said he had desperately tried to contact his industrialist father-in-law Ashok Todi and his mother-in-law Bimla via cell phone and SMS before his death on September 21.However, Rizwanur's brother Rukbanur cast doubts about the authenticity of the transcripts saying "these have neither been authenticated by any neutral agency nor have they been given to me officially".Rukbanur said his family refused to believe that Rizwanur had committed suicide after going out of the house telling his aunt that he would be back home in one and half hours and later conveying to rights activist Sujato Bhadra of his willingness to accompany him to the police."We don't believe this", he said.Rukbanur said Rizwanur was a man with strong will and he could not have committed suicide.Bhadra said Rizwanur had shortly before his death agreed to hand over to him some documents regarding a court case against him in connection with his marriage with Priyanka.The CBI checked Rizwanur's bank account and collected a mobile phone and two letters from a locker.Golcha said CBI interrogated Bimla Todi, mother of Priyanka, wife of Rizwanur. "Her statement is very important in the case", Golcha said.He said that "in the next 48 hours a lot of things will become clear."Rizwanur's death had sparked a national outcry and the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe into it.West Bengal government transferred Kolkata Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee and five other police officials of the city in the wake of allegations against them that they had pressured Rehman to part with Priyanka.
