NEW DELHI, SEPT 14: Profusely concerned at the “breakdown of law and order machinery” in West Bengal, TDP chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu today held a 30-minute closed-door meeting with Union Home Minister L.K. Advani at the latter’s North Block office.
Later speaking to mediapersons, Naidu refused to divulge the details of the meeting but stressed that political violence in West Bengal must come to an end.
Naidu parried questions on whether the Centre should clamp President’s Rule in the state or alternatively invoke the Disturbed Areas Act in parts of the state. Interestingly, Andhra Pradesh is among the few states which have stoutly opposed both these measures during the recently-held meeting of Chief Ministers in New Delhi, as well as on earlier occasions.
Home Ministry officials today chose to remain mum on the “rebuttal” which is being prepared for West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu’s reply to the Centre’s advisory on the law and order condition in the state. In his reply, Basu had refuted all the charges levelled by the Centre against the state administration as well as the ruling CPI(M).
