The election scenario in Nagaland, which is slated to elect its 60-member Assembly on March 5, is slowly hotting up with the Congress Party releasing its first list of 50 names.

While Goa Governor and former chief minister S C Jamir is not in the fray, Congress Legislature Party leader I Imkong, who is a strong contender for the Chief Minister’s post in the event of the party coming back to power, will contest from Jangpetkong.

The Nagaland People’s Front (NPF), the main partner of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) whose Government was dismissed on January 4, on the other hand, will release its first list on Wednesday. The NPF would also formally launch its campaign at Kohima the same day.

The last date for filing nomination papers is February 16, followed by withdrawal before February 20.

Sources in the NPF said from Kohima that while the party would put up “maximum” number of candidates, it would also go for adjustments in a few seats with the BJP, its main ally.

In the last Assembly elections, the NPF had won 19 seats on its own, while the BJP won seven, JD-U three, Samata one and National Democratic Movement five, apart from four independents, giving the DAN a clear edge over the Congress which had 21 seats.

The Congress, which put in all efforts to dislodge the DAN Government and capture power, has nominated five of the 19 former DAN legislators who had quit their original partners and switched over. They are Z Obed, Tiameren, Kheto Kinny, Tokheho Yepthomi and P Chuba Chang, all of whom were ministers in the DAN Government.
