Sparking off panic reminiscent of the Purulia airdrop in 1995, residents reported two mystery planes this afternoon over a village in Uttar Dinajpur district about 50 km from Siliguri in West Bengal. They claimed they heard a ‘‘loud explosion,’’ and that the planes dropped ‘‘some material’’ into a pond.

The top brass of the state police have left for the spot, the local police have cordoned off the area. And Superintendent of Police, Uttar Dinajpur, A K Sharma told The Indian Express that at least one plane was indeed seen hovering over Indian territory and that ‘‘some material’’ was dropped. He said that a search was on.

However, an Indian Air Force spokesman said there was no confirmation of any intrusion into Indian airspace. ‘‘The possibility of a low-flying aircraft is being looked into and we are in touch with the Eastern Air Command,’’ he said.

According to sketchy, preliminary reports reaching state headquarters in Kolkata, a plane first flew past Daspara, under the Chopra police station, at about 12.30 pm. It was followed by another plane soon afterwards and villagers claimed they had heard an explosion and saw ‘‘something being dropped into a pond which changed colour.’’

The village where the suspected ‘‘airdrop’’ took place is barely five km from the Bangladesh border.
