Muthappa Rai found his escape route from Dubai and membership in the Dawood Ibrahim gang in the most unlikely of events: the Gujarat communal riots.According to sources, the gangster traded information on communal riots being planned by the Dawood gang in Gujarat for a decent trial in Karnataka, where he’s wanted in 19 cases. Rai, who was extradited from Dubai on Wednesday, was brought to Bangalore on Thursday, where he was interrogated both by the CBI and the city police. He has been remanded to judicial custody till June 12.A meeting was convened a few weeks ago in Dubai by Dawood’s brother, Anees, and attended by Rai. At the meeting, a series of bomb blasts was planned in Ahmedabad, Rai allegedly traded this information with Indian intelligence agencies in exchange for a decent trial back home. In any case, Rai had an Interpol Notice issued against his name; and after UAE and India signed a treaty a few months ago, his extradition was expected, it said.
