Former Gujarat DGP K. Chakravarthy on Tuesday said posting Muslim policemen at communally-sensitive areas during post-Godhra riots could have curbed the riots but was unsure if the recommendation was considered by the state government. ‘‘I did feel posting Muslim police officers in communally-sensitive areas could have curbed the riots and I had also conveyed this suggestion to the Home department during a meeting,’’ Chakravarthy told Justices G.T. Nanavati and K.G. Shah, the two-man inquiry panel probing the Godhra train carnage and the riots.

Now, we will collect evidence: Police chief
GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat police chief A.K. Bhargav on Tuesday said there was ‘‘nothing unusual’’ in the Supreme Court’s directive as the Indian judicial system has ‘‘always had scope for such reviews’’.

He said that now, a 10-member committee comprising himself, two ADGPs and seven IGPs, would be constituted to review and investigate afresh the over 2,000 closed cases. ‘‘Now, we will collect evidence…scrutinise the cases and file chargesheets,’’ he said.

It’s between SC and Gujarat govt: Ex-PP
VADODARA: Atul Mehta, who had been appointed prosecutor by the Gujarat government in the Best Bakery case, on Tuesday described his removal by the SC as a matter ‘‘between the apex court and the state government’’. ‘‘It’s not against me as a person,’’ said Mehta. He denied reports that he had objected the Mumbai court’s issuing a second warrant against the accused. “What I told the court was the police already had a live and effective warrant from a Vadodara court and were arresting the accused on that.’’
