Pakistan cricket board will soon take a final decision on whether to appoint leg spinner Mushtaq Ahmed as the assistant coach for the series against India after both captain Inzamam-ul-Haq and coach Bob Woolmer supported him.

PCB’s ad-hock committee might again discuss the name of former test captain and fast bowler Waqar Younis for the position of bowling consultant with the team.

“Nothing is definite, but yes, Waqar’s name has been circulated in the board offices. But as far as Mushtaq is concerned he is among the candidates to be appointed as assistant coach,” a board official was quoted as saying by The News.

Mushtaq was appointed as a bowling consultant for the one-day series against England on the recommendations of the team management.

Waqar has shown keenness to accept some position with the team although last year negotiations with him broke down after he insisted on a contract till the next World Cup.

The official said PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan had also given approval for the appointment of a proper manager with the team with the clearance of the ad-hoc committee.

Madugalle is referee

Lahore: Former Sri Lankan cricketer Ranjan Madugalle has been appointed ICC Match Referee for the series in Pakistan and England. England’s Chris Broad takes over for the five ODIs. Rudi Koertzen and Darrell Hair will be the umpires in the first Test. Simon Taufel will replace Hair in Faisalabad and Hair will join Taufel for the third and final Test in Karachi. Taufel will stand in the first three ODIs before Steve Bucknor takes over.
