N.R. Narayana Murthy today said that he would be stepping down as chairman and chief mentor of Infosys Technologies Ltd on August 20, the day he completes 60 years, but made it clear that he was ready to continue as non-executive chairman of the nasdaq-listed software firm.

‘‘If the board of directors in their meeting on July 10 and 11 in their wisdom were to decide that I should continue as non-executive chairman for whatever term that they want me to be, I will be thrilled and privileged to continue as non-executive chairman,’’ he said.

At the same meeting, the board of directors would decide on the next chief mentor, as the position has to be donned by an executive person, ‘‘somebody who comes to the office everyday and spends at least eight hours a day,’’ he said. On post-retirement plans, Murthy said his presence on the board of several companies and universities abroad would keep him busy, and he ruled out joining politics.

On his unfulfilled tasks at Infosys, Murthy said he always believed in under-promise and over-delivery. ‘‘And whatever I expected from myself was much less than what god has been kind to give me strength and courage to do. I am very happy. I am a very happy man,’’ he said.
