N.R. Narayana Murthy, chairman and chief mentor of Infosys Technologies, presented a talk on ‘Is there a role for managers in the Indian government’ at the Govind Ballabh Pant Memorial Lecture here, on Saturday.
Reviewing India’s achievements in the 50-odd post-independence years of mixed feelings he said: ‘‘Our nation of a billion people is still far from achieving many of its goals. For instance, the per-capita GDP is only at $2,358. Adult literacy is at a mere 57 per cent and life expectancy is only 62.3 years. In fact, we are ranked 124 on the human development index (out of 173 nations).
