Information technology icon and Infosys Chairman Narayana Murthy today called for doing away with subsidies for higher education which, according to him, must function as an industry in a free-market environment.

He told the Indian Science Congress here that the country’s industry and academia have to be partners in building a competent and industry-savvy education system. According to him: ‘‘The only function of the Government must be to regulate the quality of higher education by setting standards. There should not be subsidies for higher education. ”

Speaking at a plenary session on ‘Information Science and Technologies for a Knowledge Society’, Murthy also asserted on developing applications which support local languages in order to help masses derive the benefits of information technology.

In addition, increased use of voice applications will let the people interact with computers using the spoken language, he said. ‘‘With an overall literacy level of around 65 per cent,’’ the Infosys chief pointed out, ‘‘India clearly needs investment in education.

The current cost of hardware in India being higher as compared to the rest of the world, Murthy also suggested that the Government should take steps to reduce tariff levels.
