Twelve days after she was raped in a local train in presence of several commuters ‘‘too paralysed’’ to intervene, the 17-year-old victim received her first visitors from home on Monday.
An aunt, taking care of her since her parents died, and an elder, married sister, were brought to J.J. Hospital, where she is recuperating.
Both women were escorted to Mumbai from a village in the foothills of Haji Malang near Kalyan. The relatives said the girl had been missing from home since nine months.
‘‘In November, she just walked out of the house saying she was going to the market. Then, she disappeared. She has run away from home on two earlier occasions and returned on each occasion.’’
This is what relatives of the girl told Dr Nilima Mehta, chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee which is helping rehabilitate her. The girl recognised her relatives and asked them how they had learnt of her whereabouts. Dr Mehta said the family has been asked to take her home. Her aunt wondered how she would support her.
The girl’s relatives will next be summoned on September 16 to allow time for medical and psychiatric tests to be performed on her. The accused in the case, Salim Khan, is to be produced in court on Wednesday.
